Cross-Enrollment at SJSU
Cross-enrollment at SJSU for students interested in aerospace engineering
This program is primarily for UCSC students in Applied Physics, Physics, and Physics (Astrophysics), but is open to all UCSC undergraduates.
As mentioned in the catalog statement for the Applied Physics major, the Applied Physics major gives students a more straightforward path (compared to Astrophysics or Physics) into a Master’s program in Aerospace Engineering or directly into jobs in the aerospace industry from UCSC. After consulting with Aerospace Engineering faculty nationwide on how to best prepare you for Aerospace programs after completing your UCSC Physics degree, we recommend you take ECE 141, PHYS 160 or ECE 101, and AM 107 as your three required Applied Physics upper-division electives. If you are not an Applied Physics major, PHYS 160 and AM 107 are electives in the Physics major, and AM 107 is an elective in the Astrophysics major.
For students who want even better preparation for the aerospace field, we arranged a cross-enrollment opportunity with San Jose State University to allow UCSC students to cross-enroll in their classes.
The most important and relevant courses for possible cross-enrollment are:
Course # | Course Title | Prerequisites |
AE 165 | Aerospace Flight Mechanics | PHYS 5A, MATH 19B |
AE 110 | Space Systems Engineering | SJSU AE 165 |
AE 112 | Aerospace Structures and Materials I | PHYS 5A, MATH 19B |
AE 114 | Aerospace Structures and Materials II | SJSU AE 112 |
AE 160 | Aerodynamics I | MATH 19B, PHYS 5A |
AE 162 | Aerodynamics II |
SJSU AE 160 + (PHYS 116A or MATH 24) |
Please contact physicsadvising@ucsc.edu if a question comes up about your preparation for one of these courses.
Important things to note:
- The SJSU courses won’t replace your major electives or any other required courses.
- The availability of seats in any given course in any given semester is up to SJSU and is not guaranteed.
- You can enroll in one SJSU course per term without paying additional tuition to SJSU. You will be subject to a $10 processing fee plus any material and laboratory fees associated with the class you cross-enroll in.
- The SJSU courses will appear on your UCSC transcript, but the grades will not contribute to your UCSC GPA.
- The SJSU courses will contribute to the 180 units required to graduate, with one semester unit at SJSU counting as 1.5 quarter units.
- To be eligible for the cross-enrollment you must meet the following criteria:
- completed at least one term at UCSC as a matriculated student
- enrolled for a minimum of six units for the current term at UCSC
- earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0
- paid all Registration Fees fees at UCSC for the current term
- be a California resident for tuition purposes at home campus
- Because SJSU is on a semester system, if you take a course in their spring semester it will span over winter and spring quarters. You must ensure that the class and the commute don’t interfere with your winter or spring classes at UCSC. Be sure you leave plenty of time for that commute, and understand how long it will take by car and/or bus.
- The SJSU credits will count toward full-time enrollment. However, if you enroll in a spring course at SJSU, the 4.5 credits will be applied to your spring enrollment, not in winter. If you want to take fewer than 15 credits at UCSC in winter while enrolled in an SJSU spring semester course, please talk with your college advisor and the financial aid office regarding full-time status beforehand to understand the consequences.
According to the SJSU Registrar’s Office, use the procedure below for cross enrollment. For fall classes at SJSU, we recommend starting the process in May when you start registering for fall classes at UCSC. For spring classes at SJSU, which begin in January, we recommend you start the process at the beginning of fall quarter.
- UCSC students fill out the Cross Enrollment form. UCSC’s Special Programs Coordinator completes the HOME CAMPUS CERTIFICATION. Email your signed and scanned application to sp-regis@ucsc.edu.
- UCSC’s Special Programs Coordinator approves eligibility and signs their portion of the form.
- UCSC students get approval to add the course at SJSU by obtaining the instructor’s signature on the form, and the instructor provides a permission number.
- Students submit the completed form to SJSU's Office of the Registrar.
- The SJSU Assistant Registrar and their team will build the student’s record and enroll them in the class if there is an available seat.
- Students will receive notification of enrollment and instructions on activating their one.sjsu.edu account.
- The SJSU Registrar’s Office will inform the Bursar’s Office of the student’s status, and they will waive the student’s related SJSU tuition and assess any fees.
Students who wish to drop their SJSU class must contact the SJSU Office of the Registrar (registrar@sjsu.edu), and should copy the UCSC Special Programs Coordinator as well (sp-regis@ucsc.edu). Students are responsible for requesting official transcripts at the end of the term to be sent back to UCSC.
