Support the Physics Department

Throughout its history, the Physics Department at UC Santa Cruz has relied on the generosity of its alumni and friends. Never before has private support been so important. Your gift is an investment that will allow us to enrich and enhance our educational program and to create new opportunities for our students, faculty and all who benefit from the pursuit of knowledge.

Physics Undergraduate Research Excellence Fund

The physics department is continually searching for ways and means to engage undergraduate students in research. Establishing an undergraduate research fund to provide support for top-performing students would enhance ongoing efforts, helping the department retain promising students during the summer quarter.

Physics Instructional Lab Upgrade Fund

The physics department takes great pride in its instructional lab offerings for undergraduates. We are introducing new experiements on holography, magneto-optical traps, and positron emission tomography. We seek to further enhance our offerings by upgrading existing equipment and adding more new experiments, including integrating large-scale data acquisition and mining activities into the standard labs, and adding experiments demonstrating quantum physics in the modern context of entanglement of many-body systems as sought for quantum computation.

Physics Colloquium and Seminar Fund

The presence of out-of-state speakers offers immense benefits to the department, not only by exposing students to cutting-edge research not covered by our own faculty, but also by fostering new collaborations. This is especially valuable for our junior members—postdocs and students—who gain access to potential collaborators and career opportunities through such interactions. Additionally, these visits enhance the department’s national and international visibility, strengthening our academic reputation.

Physics Undergraduate Research Travel Fund

Undergraduate research can be a transformative educational experience. An essential aspect of research is the communication of ideas and networking within the field, which is the dual purpose of scientific conferences. We seek to enhance the undergraduate research experience by offering to select undergraduates, the opportunity to travel to a research conference during the academic year.
